Background: Surgical fixation of radius shaft fractures typically employs either the Henry (volar) or Thompson (dorsal) approach. This study compares their functional outcomes, intraoperative parameters, and complications.
Methods: A prospective study of 60 patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for isolated radius shaft fractures from January 2025 to June 2026. Patients were divided into Henry (n=30) and Thompson (n=30) groups. Outcomes assessed included DASH scores, range of motion (ROM), grip strength, time to union, operative time, blood loss, and complications.
Results: The Henry group showed better early wrist flexion, forearm supination (p<0.05), and final DASH scores, indicating superior functional recovery. The Thompson group had longer operative times and higher rates of extensor tendon irritation. Union rates were similar across both groups.
Conclusions: The Henry approach offers improved functional outcomes and fewer complications, making it the preferred option for most radius shaft fractures.
